TNT Garage Doors Wants Your Garage Door to Work Year Round
This month, we’re describing common problems garage doors have during winter. In general, cold weather can affect the functionality of mechanical components. The same is true for garage doors. During winter, garage doors can suffer:
- Contracting metal
- Frozen panels
- Damaged weatherstripping
- Broken springs
In Winter, Garage Doors Can Get Frozen Panels and Broken Springs
Frozen panels and broken springs in garage doors are common during the winter. To fix frozen panels, apply heat to the affected area using a blow dryer. Set it to a low temperature, and direct the nose at the ice buildup on the frozen panels. Broken spring repairs can be harder to take care of yourself, but not impossible.
It’s Better to Replace than to Repair Broken Springs
If you find broken springs in your garage door during or after winter, we suggest replacing, rather than repairing. Though we highly recommend using a professional, it’s possible to replace broken springs in your garage door yourself. That said, because of the different types of garage door springs, there’s a significant difference in ease of replacement. Broken extension springs are easier to replace DIY than broken torsion springs.
Winter Can Create Damaged Weatherstripping and Contracting Metal Garage Doors
Winter weather can also create damaged weatherstripping and contracting metal. Contracting metal can cause the garage door to malfunction. Damaged weatherstripping resulting from winter traps the weatherstripping between the ice and ground, and can tear when the door rises. Over time, the damaged weatherstripping can harden and crack, eliminate the seal, and decrease the garage’s warmth inside.
