Cleaning Garage Doors After Winter

Cleaning a Garage Door After Winter Maintains its Aesthetic Appeal

Cleaning garage doors after winter can feel tedious, but it’s necessary to maintain aesthetic appeal and functionality. When you clean your garage door in the spring, you rid it of dirt and grime build-up. Over time, this build-up dulls the garage door’s surface, and negatively impacts your home’s exterior. TNT Garage Doors suggests you clean your garage door using a:

  • Hose and Sprayer
  • Non-Abrasive Cloth
  • Mild Detergent
  • Liquid Spray Wax

Start with a Hose and Sprayer Before Moving on to a Non-Abrasive Cloth

The first step to clean a garage door after winter is rinsing off dirt and grime that has built up. You can easily accomplish this with a hose and sprayer. We strongly recommend you use a hose and sprayer rather than a pressure washer; pressure washing can damage the panels. The sprayer nozzle angle settings should include zero, 15, 25, and 40 degrees. After you use the hose and sprayer, move on to a non-abrasive cloth.

Abrasive vs. Non-Abrasive Cloths

Abrasive cloths are any material you use in grinding, polishing, or sanding. Non-abrasive cloths include softer materials, that won’t cause scratches, and doesn’t shed fibers. Microfiber is an example of a non-abrasive cloth.

Use Mild Detergent to Clean the Garage Door and Liquid Spray Wax to Finish

When we say “mild detergent,” we mean cleaning products with surfactants, but not builders. Surfactants in mild detergents dissolve dirt and grease. Builders are compounds, which are added detergents to improve their cleaning properties, such as zeolite A. Mild detergents that work well in cleaning garage doors include Tide®, Borax®, and Simple Green®. After you clean your garage door with a mild detergent, dry it with a non-abrasive cloth. For the last step, finish it with a liquid spray wax.

Benefits of Liquid Spray Wax

Liquid spray wax provides your garage door with durability. The higher the concentrate in a liquid spray wax, the longer its effectiveness. On metal garage doors, liquid spray wax helps to prevent rust. Liquid spray wax also restores the garage door’s factory-applied finish look.
